Does personal style matter?
“One should either be a work of art, or wear a work of art.”
― Oscar Wilde
We all know someone that just “does not care” about what they wear and opts for sweatsuits every day. I’m not saying there is anything wrong with that because it’s their prerogative to wear what they want and maybe it represents who they are.
Fashion is the best way to express yourself without saying anything.
Personal style is one of the first things someone notices about you. Think about what image you want to project to the world. Personal style can also affect how you feel and act.
Here are 7 reasons why I believe personal style matters:
-
Outfits can affect your mood and characteristics-Wearing an outfit that looks nice can boost confidence. In the book “Mind What You Wear: The Psychology of Fashion,” by Professor Karen Jane Pine she explains “When we put on a piece of clothing we cannot help but adopt some of the characteristics associated with it, even if we are unaware of it.”
-
Fashion can affect how others see you-Do you want to be seen as professional, bold, lazy or something else? You choose. Some people think this doesn’t matter but you never know who you may run into. It can create opportunities since people are more likely to take you seriously if you look presentable.
-
Fashion is a way to be creative-There’s no doubt about the creativity that comes in putting together outfits. Fashion is a form of art.
-
It shows self-worth- Caring about your style can show you take the time out for yourself to ensure you look your best.
-
You can meet new people-An outfit is a conversation starter. There are many people you can meet from a compliment or a comment about an item of clothing.
-
There’s science to it – A study done by Lefkowitz, Blake, and Mouton (1955) revealed that a person dressed in a business suit was seen as someone with authority.
-
It’s fun-Last but definitely not least, dressing up can be fun! It doesn’t have to be a chore. Plan your outfits out while listening to music and/or consulting a friend.
You put the reasons back into my mind! I guess we all do adopt the emotions of the clothing we wear subconsciously–I never thought of it that way. I guess time to get out of these sweatpants! Lol
